PROVIDING A BETTER LIFE FOR ELEPHANTS AND THEIR MAHOUTS

I spent the morning updating the project blog and adding pictures to the website.

It has occurred to me that I haven't given an explanation for what the Surin Elephant Projct is, so I will do that now.

Based in Thailand's Eastern province of Surin, the Surin Project works with communities that have lived an worked with elephants for hundreds of years. Since the country's ban on logging and prevalence of machinery, work for elephants is limited and with no other opportunities the people of these communities often starve. The government has developed initiatives that aim to encourage commented to use elephant to help attract tourists to the area. Many of these projects allow tourists to ride the elephants and to watch them do tricks. The Surin Project is against these practices. The project works alongside these communities and encourages tourism shaped by ethical and responsible eco-tourism approaches.

The Surin Project is also committed to raising awareness regarding the plight of the Asian elephant and inspiring people worldwide to work together towards finding solutions to these problems.

Volunteers such as myself help out by building shelters, digging irrigation canals and planting elephant food. In addition to these tasks I will help update the program website/blog and developing materials for English lessons.

In the afternoon I feed the elephants, clean the shelters and helped with an english class.
