At 7a.m I finally manage to drag myself out of bed and join the other volunteers at the enclosure for a light breakfast of toast with jam, fresh fruit and coffee.

First project of the day involves raking up the leftover grass and leaves and picking up elephant poo.

Then we proceed on our first nature walk with the elephants.

During the late afternoon I had a chance to sit down with several of the mahouts and interview their involvement with the project and why they think it is important.  For many of them, their fathers and grandfathers were mahouts and they were never given the option to pursue anything else. After talking for over an hour the interview session turned into a lesson in Thai language as the Mahouts attempted to teach me different words and phrases.
